Why Gen Z Recycles Differently — And What Brands Need to Know
Gen Z consumers express high sustainability intent but show dramatically different actual disposal behavior compared to older cohorts. New behavioral data reveals the gap — and the opportunity.
Gen Z is the most sustainability-conscious generation in CPG brand surveys. They say they recycle. They say they care about packaging. They say it influences their purchase decisions.
But observed behavioral data tells a more nuanced story.
Across 42,000 ECGO behavioral scans, Gen Z recycling participation rates vary by 3.2x depending on category, packaging format, and whether they received any point-of-disposal guidance.
The Guidance Gap
The single biggest predictor of Gen Z recycling compliance is whether they knew what to do with the packaging. 67% of non-recycled items in our dataset were marked by the consumer as 'unsure how to dispose of this.' Not unwilling — uncertain.
This is a brand opportunity, not a consumer failure. The brands that win with Gen Z on sustainability will be the ones that close the guidance gap at the moment of disposal, not just at the moment of purchase.
What This Means for Your Brand
If your packaging claims recyclability but you have no mechanism to guide consumers at end-of-life, your actual recycling rate is likely 6-10x lower than your stated rate. ECGO's behavioral data can show you exactly where the gap is — and what format and messaging interventions close it fastest.
