Post-Consumption Data: The New First-Party Intelligence Category
With third-party cookies gone and purchase data commoditized, the next competitive advantage in CPG is behavioral data from after the transaction ends.
For two decades, CPG brands competed on who had the best purchase data. POS data, panel data, loyalty card data — the arms race was about understanding what consumers bought.
That era is ending.
Purchase data is now table stakes. Every major brand has it. The competitive question is no longer 'what did they buy?' It's 'what did they do with it?'
The First-Party Gap
With cookie deprecation, brands lost their most reliable window into post-purchase consumer behavior online. But there was always a bigger gap they weren't addressing: what happens physically, after the product leaves the home.
This is where post-consumption behavioral data comes in.
What Post-Consumption Data Tells You That Purchase Data Doesn't
Disposal patterns by SKU, region, and demographic
Packaging format performance at end-of-life
Consumer confusion points that drive incorrect disposal
Category-level recycling benchmarks
Gen Z and Millennial behavioral segmentation
The brands building first-party post-consumption data programs now will have a 3-5 year head start on the rest of their category.
